3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering to Take place in May

Dearborn, Mich., February 2, 2006 -- The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has announced 3D SCANNING: Reverse Engineering, Analysis, and Inspection conference and exposition. This first of its kind event focuses on non-contact scanning techonology to capture and process high resolution 3D spatial geometries. The event is scheduled for May 23-24, 2006 at Pheasant Run, St. Charles, Illinois.

"Discussions amongst the technical group's members revealed that there are no events that address the needs of those doing short-range scanning of mechanical and medical objects. In response, SME created this show to give designers, engineers and manufacturers a venue for information, demonstration and networking focused on short-range, non-contact scanning," said Todd Grimm, chairman of SME's 3D Data Capture/Reverse Engineering technical group.

The conference will provide practical knowledge to support effective technology selection and use. Technologies that will be represented include laser, white light and photogrammetric scanning; articulated arm-based touch probe digitizing; and destructive scanning for capture of internal geometry. A combination of case studies and interactive, problem-solving discussions will bring together industry leaders to give the best information available. The exposition will house hardware and software vendors and service bureuas. Attendees will get hands-on exposure to the wide variety of scanning techniques, processes and technology.

The event also features a half-day workshop for those that want to get up to speed quickly. The workshop, slated for May 22, 2006, will highlight the three most popular portable scanning methods: touch probe, laser, and optical. Technology experts will lead participants through the scanning process, data manipulation, exporting and application in live demonstrations.

Rounding out the agenda are a 3D Data Capture/Reverse Engineering Tech Group meeting and a networking reception, both to be held on Wednesday, May 24th.

3D Scanning will co-locate with SME's highly popular Rapid Prototyping & Manufacturing (RAPID 2006) conference. Also co-locating is the CAD Data Exchange: Productivity Through Interoperability Conference. This combination of events offers attendees a convenient way to gather intelligence on a broad spectrum of data capture, design, prototyping and manufacturing tools.
